Basic Agroforestry Baltimori, Year 1

Status:
completed

The first year of the Basic Agroforestry project (2008-9) saw the participation of 10 farmers from the rural community of Baltimori, home of Camino Verde's center and Living Seed Bank.  Each of the participants chose tree species including economically-important fruit trees such as citrus and avocado, along with old-growth Amazonian hardwoods such as mahogany, ironwood, and brazil nut.  Technicians from the Puerto Maldonado-based Association for Ecological Agriculture helped create planting designs and provided support to the farmers during and after planting.  Each farmer planted a quarter hectare (half acre), roughly 70 trees per farmer, for a total of 700 trees planted in this first year.

Eligible farmers (those who cared for the trees received) will be offered further seedlings in the second year.  Also, Baltimori community members who did not opt to participate in the project's first year will be invited to sign on for the second year.
