Tree planting campaign 2009-2010

Status:
completed

In the rainy (planting) season of 2009-2010, we prepared the ground for the planting of over 1000 trees.  This year our focus Heritage Tree Species was the untranslatable Moena Alcanforada, a tree in the same family as bay laurel and avocado noted for its fine timber and its rich camphor-like essential oils.  Additionally, we added a new species of tropical cedar (Cedrela fissilis) and pink cedar (Acrocarpus fraxinifolius).  Other important species planted this year were copaiba (Copaifera sp.) and huayruro viudo (Ormosia sp.).  In all, 1010 individual trees were planted, bringing the total number of species in the Living Seed Bank to over 180.

Also, this year we began the process of GIS mapping of the Living Seed Bank reforestation and agroforestry areas.  To date, Camino Verde cultivates over 5-and-a-half hectares of land (over 12 acres).  Check back soon for the first map.
