Research & Educational Center
Camino Verde´s 25 hectares (roughly 60 acres) on the outskirts of the village of La Joya, sits just five kilometers away from Madre de Dios´s capital and heart, Puerto Maldonado. The close proximity to Puerto Maldonado allows La Joya to serve as a potential educational and experimental center once our activities here begin to convert the yellow grasses into more fertile pastures. A standing plant nursery, experiments in alternative and sustainable energy, the scene of workshops and seminars for and by local farmers—these are just a few of the possibilities for La Joya in the future. We also plan to further our goal of reforesting a desolate landscape by eventually planting useful trees-- medicinal, fruit and nuts, timber-- to take advantage of the restored soil quality. To this end, our ten year plan includes the development of the La Joya land to create a peerless center for the practical study and implementation of reforestation.
